If you are willing to brave a chill in the air, late fall is a good time for an engagement session in the Washington DC area. Some of our favorite sessions have been in late November and early December. There are still some yellow leaves left on the trees, and even some greenery if you chose a location with pines or other evergreens. The sun is lower in the sky and typically flattering even at "high" noon.
At Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, you can reserve a session time for your session. Reservations are limited so the park isn't overrun by photo sessions and you feel like you have the park all to yourselves. Just be sure to call a month or so ahead as these slots fill up quickly.
The gardens might not be as green, but the path winding through the acres of manicured foliage leads to a large pond with a gazebo, as well as a Korean Bell Garden. Be sure to explore the area called Lake Lena in the wetlands area. Wood walkways help you navigate the swampy area and enjoy the water lilies and different types of herons that frequent the small lake.
The atrium at Meadowlark is also available as a wedding venue. The glass walled reception space overlooks the botanical gardens. A patio provides and optional ceremony space and can also be used for cocktail hour. No need for a tent, as the windows give you the feel of the outdoors, rain or shine. Sun streams through the glass ceiling giving accent lighting to your table settings. A small man made stream also flows through the space.
