Lots of couples in the District and beyond are bucking the long standing traditions of wedding ceremonies and receptions. The bouquet and garter toss, unity candles, and white dresses are no longer the rule for a wedding day. Champagne colored dresses, couples that read their text messages they exchanged as they fell in love, and keeping that bouquet for themselves are a few of the ways couples are making their days uniquely their own.
Another tradition that is changing here in the Washington DC metro area, is how the bride or groom is escorted down the aisle. Older friends and family will be surprised when you decide to be escorted down the aisle by a close family member, best friend, cousin, or even opt to walk through the doors of your ceremony without an escort. It's really all up to you and how you want your ceremony.
This new "tradition" of doing things your way as you vow your life together is a way to work your own personality into each moment of your special day. There are no hard and fast rules of weddings any more, besides making sure you thank all the people who love you and came out to celebrate with you.
